Where do sperm mature and are stored?

Sperm maturation and storage occur in the epididymis, which is a coiled tube located at the back of each testis. After sperm are produced in the seminiferous tubules of the testes, they are not yet fully mature and capable of fertilization. The spermatozoa then travel to the epididymis, where they undergo further maturation over a period of days to weeks. During this time, they gain motility and the ability to fertilize an egg.

The epididymis also serves as a storage site for mature sperm until ejaculation. When the male is sexually aroused, sperm are transported from the epididymis through the vas deferens, joining other fluids to form semen in preparation for ejaculation. This process highlights the important role of the epididymis in ensuring that sperm are adequately matured and stored for potential reproductive purposes.
